Katherine Jiménez is a dynamic force in the world of dance – an educator, performer, choreographer, and community advocate known for blending Afro-Latin roots with classical and contemporary styles. Born and raised in New York City, Katherine began her dance journey at The Ailey School and graduated from the Professional Performing Arts High School (PPAS) and New York University (NYU), where she earned a master’s degree in Dance Education from the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
With over two decades of experience, Katherine has trained extensively under esteemed masters of NY Style Mambo and in a wide range of techniques. She is proudly recognized as the first NY Style Mambo instructor at both The Ailey School (via the Ailey Extension) and PPAS. Currently, she is a Dance Education Professor at NYU, where she teaches Afro-Latin and Afro-Caribbean techniques, history, and culture.
Katherine’s performance career spans internationally and across iconic NYC stages including City Center, Radio City Music Hall, The United Palace, Hostos, and Lincoln Center. She has shared the stage with legendary artists such as Tony Vega, Johnny Pacheco, Andy Montañez, Marvin Santiago, and Willie Colón. She’s also served as a judge for the World Salsa Summit, helping dancers refine their craft on a global stage.
A passionate advocate for accessibility in dance, Katherine launched KJon2.com, a virtual streaming platform created during the pandemic to offer live and on-demand dance content to people of all backgrounds. Her mission centers on using dance as a tool for mental, emotional, and physical wellness.
Katherine’s teaching credits span respected institutions like The Independent Training Program at Broadway Dance Center, Steps on Broadway, its Youth and Professional Training Programs. She has conducted workshops for Alvin Ailey’s Arts in Education Teaching Artists, collaborated with Columbia University to bring movement to senior citizens through events like AIM High and the Healthy Brain Fair, and contributed to Noggin x Ailey’s Dance Campaign promoting Latin Fusion styles.
Her work has been featured in PIX11, The New York Times, The Sherri Show, Cheddar News with Shannon LaNier, Latina Magazine, and CUNY TV, highlighting her impact on the Mambo and Latin dance communities. Through The Ailey Experience Tours, Katherine continues to travel nationally, sharing her knowledge and passion with dancers across the country.
Katherine is known for her ability to break down complex movements with clarity, making the joy and richness of dance accessible to all. Whether in the studio, on stage, or online, she leads with purpose, cultural pride, and an unwavering commitment to education, empowerment, and community through dance.
